Day two of the second Ashes Test ended with England batting at 278-4 in 61 overs at stumps at Lord's Cricket Ground.
Harry Brook (45) and Ben Stokes (17) will resume the batting for the hosts on day three.
England trail by 138 runs in the first inning.
England started their inning following their BazBall brand with the opener Zak Crawley scoring 48 off 48 with five boundaries.
Playing at a run rate of almost five runs per over, another day of extraordinary display was shown by the English batters.
However, with the aggressiveness, came the loss of wickets as England have lost four wickets in just 61 overs at the end of day two.
Ben Duckett led the English attack against the Aussies as he scored 98 runs with some exceptional batting display in which he scored nine boundaries, but got unlucky though, as the cricketer lost his wicket to Josh Hazlewood with just two runs shy of a remarkable hundred.
However, despite the constant counterattack by the Englishmen, the Aussies managed to get a breakthrough as Mitchell Starc, who returned to the Australian line-up after missing the first Test, removed Joe Root thanks to a stunning low-ground catch by Steve Smith.
Earlier, Australia resumed their batting at the start of day two at 339-5 with Smith and Alex Carey on the crease but the wicketkeeper was soon removed by Stuart Broad.
However, Smith, who completed 9,000 Test runs yesterday, scored his 32nd Test century before heading back to the pavilion for 110 following a brilliant catch by Duckett at second slip to give Josh Tongue, an Ashes debutant who on day one removed David Warner and Usman Khawaja with astonishing in-swingers, got his third of the inning.
Australian skipper Pat Cummins, the hero of the first Test at Edgbaston, once again batted with courage and patience and remained unbeaten for 22 as Australia were all out after posting 416 on the scoreboard.
